The Goldilocks Rule: maximum motivation occurs when you face a challenge of just manageable difficulty--> to maintain motivation, work on challenges of just manageable difficulty
Yerkes-Dodson Law: the optimum level of arousal is located at the midpoint b/n boredom & anxiety
When starting a habit --> make the behaviour as easy as possible
Once a habit has been established --> need to continue advance it in small ways beyond its periphery --> if you hit the Goldilocks Zone just right, you can enter the flow state
Flow state: the experience of being "in the zone" & fully immersed in an activity
To achieve the flow state, the task has to be 4% beyond your current ability
Once a habit is formed and you get better at it --> can become routine --> boredom --> if you think you are progressing well, and rationalize to take a day off --> you slip back into the old habit
The only way to become excellent is to be fascinated by doing the same thing over and over again --> You have to fall in love with boredom
Professionals stick to the schedule NO MATTER WHAT, amateurs let life get in the way
When a habit is truly important to you, you stick to it in any mood you are in
==> do NOT make excuses for yourself when you skip your daily reading!! (e.g. I'm too tired after a 12 hour shift to read) --> you stick to the schedule, and work toward it NO MATTER WHAT!
