8 Components of Enjoyment / Flow (continued):
The merging of action & awareness
- All relevant skills are needed to cope with the challenge --> our whole attention is concentrated on the relevant stimuli
- people become so involved that the activity becomes spontaneous, almost automatic --> people stop being aware of themselves as separate from the actions they are performing, actions become effortless --> the merging of action & awareness
- flow requires strenuous physical exertion or highly disciplined mental activity
Clear Goals and Feedback
- flow state requires clear goals, and immediate feedback
- what constitutes feedback may vary in different activities, what's important is the symbolic message it contains: that I have succeeded in my goal --> this knowledge creates order in consciousness, and strengthens the structure of the self
Concentration on the task at hand
- complete focus of attention on the task at hand --> leaving no room in the mind for irrelevant information --> impose order in consciousness --> a state of psychic negentropy, strengthened structure of the self
- Narrowed window of time:
- "as if my memory input has been cut off. All I can remember is the last 30 sec, and all I can think ahead is the next 5 mins"
