Monument old and new
Why do we build munuments, can you name the most outstanding old ones?
1THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
The france give the statue of liberty to the united states as a gesture of friendship.when liberty originally arrived in the states, the amercans were fairly indifferent and had not finished the base on which she was to be mounted.since then more than 17 million immigrants arriving in america for the first time have passed under its protetive gaza.but now the monument is in need of repair.the workers restoring it face a huge challenge.they must mend the damage done over all these years by weather salt and vandals.a communist newspaper .althought work is going on for the moment ,tension is nounting, and there is no contact between the two groups of workers.the total cost of the repairs will be 30 million dollars. 2 million of these will go to a french metal work company in rheims in france ,who say they won their contract because they are the most qualified workers around.the daily world quoted one local worker as saying that it was an insult to the amercan people not to be repairing the torch themselves.however there have already been difficulties----and not just technical ones.now it looks as if her restoration will suffer a similar delay, not through indifference but through passion.if all goes according to plan, they will complete the work on liberty by 1986---the one hundredth anniversary of her dedication.

2Leaning Tower of Pisa
The tower of pisa,it leans when the buiding was half completed ,the soil under one half of the circular structure began to subside.in 1275 architects devised a plan to compensate for the tilt.but the leaning has continued to increase gradually throughout the centuries
3A pyramid at the louvre
A glass pyramid is to be built in its centre courtyard above a network of underground car parks, shops and restaurants.it will be a great contrast to the majestic buidings surrounding it.which have changed little since they were erected by the architect le vau in the seventeenth century.
The project will cost a lot of money ,has of course given rise to a lot of controversy. People are for the daring twentieth century adventury ,others wish to preserve the past as it is.
